Removing Negative Items From Credit Report

Are there any effective ways to get negative items, like a couple of late payments, off my credit report before 7 years? I think 7 years is way to long to keep people down. It really should be reduced to 5 years at most for late payments in my opinion.

You can contact the creditors directly who reported the negative items and ask them to remove the item, but you will probably not have to much luck.
