On the New York Stock Exchange they are called specialist, and on the Nasdaq they are called market makers. To be honest the process as to how this occurs isn't worth discussing, and would probably put you to sleep. Rest assured as a simple everyday investor though you will not be stuck when you are trying to buy or sell stock. You may not always get the exact price you want, but you will be able to sell your stock.
